Dressed to Kill
Abstract:
Nanotechnology is a large word for a science focused on the very small that many at the Pentagon believe will revolutionize the modern soldier. A highly theoretical science, nanotechnology focuses on the creation of materials at nearly an atomic level, and has been called the next industrial revolution. Up to now the use of nanotechnology has been directed toward advancements in electronics as in the case of microchips.
At the heart of this technological revolution is the soldier. Still the active player in warfare, the survivability of American men and women in combat is tantamount. While the successes of today's body armor is more successful than ever before, the military understands a need for a lighter and more maneuverable system that will increase both productivity as well as survivability on the battle field. These advancements include strides in flame retardation, bulletproof materials, and smart fabrics with the ability to sense heat, moisture, body stress and sustained injuries.
