Abstract:
Virtus has announced that Dr. Mark Boysel has joined its staff as Chief Scientist. Dr. Boysel will be based in Virtus' US HQ office located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Boysel joins Virtus from the Infotonics Technology Center, a New York State Center of Excellence in Microsystems and MEMS foundry. As Infotonic's Chief MEMS Scientist, he developed new MEMS technologies and assisted customers in developing their MEMS products. Dr. Boysel has been working in the field of MEMS and microfabrication for 23 years. He received his Ph. D. degree in Experimental Low Temperature Condensed Matter Physics from The Ohio State University 1981 and held post-doctoral positions at Imperial College in London, and at the University of California, Santa Barbara where he did fundamental research respectively on inhomogeneous superconductors and conducting polymers. From 1985-1995 Dr. Boysel worked at Texas Instruments' Central Research Laboratories where he helped develop the Digital Micromirror MEMS technology used in TI's DLP (Digital Light Processing) projection televisions and in conference room and theater projectors. Since 1995, Dr. Boysel has worked in two start-up efforts (eMagin and Solus Microtechnologies) to develop other display technologies including field emission displays and electron beam addressed MEMS and elastomeric displays. He also has research experience at Motorola Flat Panel, where he acted as Yield Enhancement Engineer for Field Emission Display development and at Corning, Inc., where he led the Surface Science and Nanotechnology Group.
"I am very excited about joining Virtus. I was attracted to Virtus for several reasons. Virtus is not a typical MEMS startup. Most important to me was Mr. Ross' grasp of the global MEMS accelerometer market." Louis Ross is President & CEO of Virtus. "Virtus participates in a highly competitive market which would be a challenge for most start-ups, but it is backed by a strong IP portfolio and has a market-ready product, which is unusual for an early stage startup. I was attracted as well by the atmosphere of teamwork. Also, I was intrigued by Virtus' global presence, with collaborations in Asia and Europe. Finally, I was impressed with the cultural, technical, historical, and recreational opportunities Pittsburgh has to offer. I am looking forward to helping Virtus grow and create new MEMS accelerometer designs and applications, especially with universities and businesses in the Pittsburgh area."
"Mark brings a lot of long-term experience that will help to accelerate our growth as a company and to achieve our plans as being one of the leading sensor providers. His unique combination of tenures at large established firms, venture companies and public research institutes fits well with our needs. He represents some of the most experienced and best talent in the US in the MEMS field," according to Mr. Ross.
