Home > Press > Pharmacy Fellow Receives Prestigious Award
Abstract:
Xiuling Lu, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy has been awarded the 2008 Cassen Post-Doctoral Fellowship Award from the Society of Nuclear Medicine (SNM). Lu will conduct her research in the laboratory of Mike Jay, professor of pharmaceutical sciences at UK.
This prestigious two-year fellowship will be used to support her work on dual imaging-therapeutic nanovectors which is a nanotechnology approach to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. This will allow pharmacokineticists and oncologists to quickly assess the concentration of chemotherapeutic agents delivered to tumors instead of relying on blood levels, which can take a long time to obtain and are often misleading. Additionally, this work is expected to aid in the optimization of chemotherapy treatment regimens by enhancing their effectiveness while reducing toxic side effects.
Co-directors of this study include Dr. John Rinehart, associate director for clinical research at UK Healthcare's Division of Hematology and Oncology and Mark Leggas, assistant professor, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
The SNM is an international scientific and professional organization founded in 1954 to promote the science, technology and practical application of nuclear medicine. The Society maintains an active advocacy program to promote and encourage research and the advancement of nuclear medicine science and produces a number of programs to help physicians and technologists remain current with the latest advances. The Society also sponsors education programs for consumers to help them understand nuclear medicine and the constructive role it can play in both diagnostic and therapeutic therapies.
