AT&T Philanthropy in North Carolina Tops $2.5 Million in 2007

AT&T Inc. has announced that, in 2007, philanthropic giving in North Carolina exceeded $2.5 million. Nearly 350 organizations in North Carolina received a contribution or grant from AT&T or the AT&T Foundation, the company's corporate philanthropy organization.

"We compete in a global communications marketplace that begins in every town and community," said Cynthia Marshall, AT&T state president. "Serving our customers is a privilege that also carries a sacred responsibility. It is both our desire and our heritage to be involved in civic life in ways that make North Carolina an even better place for everyone to live and work."

In 2007, AT&T philanthropic contributions touched the lives of citizens from the mountains to the sea, in metropolitan areas and in rural communities. They came in the areas of education, arts and culture, economic development, community enrichment and diversity.

"AT&T is dedicated to providing the communications and entertainment services our customers need and want at any time and any place," Marshall said. "That's a worthy goal, and we work hard to meet it every day. But we also want the North Carolina of tomorrow to be a little better than the North Carolina of today because of our efforts. That's what AT&T's corporate philanthropy is all about."

AT&T's contributions in 2007 included giving: -- $100,000 to the North Carolina Museum of Art to support the Landscapes from the Age of Impressionism exhibition. -- $100,000 each to the Wake Education Partnership and to Mecklenburg Citizens for Public Education to assist in education reform and teacher-retention efforts in Wake and Mecklenburg counties. -- $75,000 to The Southeastern Partnership II, which works for business recruitment and job creation in 11 southeastern North Carolina counties to meet technology needs and help provide technology training for area residents. -- $50,000 to the Children's Home Society of North Carolina to support recruiting prospective foster families and adoptive parents in the Triangle region. -- $25,000 to the URBAN League of the Central Carolinas to help fund two new programs that will offer basic computer-literacy training for minority students in conjunction with character-building instruction. -- $25,000 to Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute to help facilitate technological training in Caldwell County and surrounding areas. -- $25,000 to the Latin American Chamber of Commerce Foundation to support an innovative program of scholarships and entrepreneurial skills training. -- $15,000 to enable Communities In Schools of Charlotte to replace a minibus used to transport at-risk children to various activities.

Last year marked the first time North Carolina participated in the AT&T Excelerator grant program, a national program that provides technology access to organizations serving diverse ethnic groups, low-income families, people with disabilities, youth or senior adults. More than $340,000 was awarded to 17 organizations across the state. For example, a grant was given to:

-- The St. Agnes Foundation (Raleigh) to provide online access to educational information regarding medical ailments plaguing the minority community. -- KidSenses Children's InterActive Museum (Rutherfordton) to support a collaborative effort to bring Web-based science education to rural elementary students. -- Central Piedmont Community College (Charlotte) to support an expansion of educational opportunities for disabled students. -- Trinity Oaks Retirement Community (Salisbury) to support a unique intergenerational training activity, pairing computer-savvy middle school students with retirees interested in learning computer basics. -- Latino Advocacy Coalition of Henderson County (Hendersonville) to support an expansion of the LAC's computer lab that is used for basic computer-literacy classes. -- Youth Homes Inc. (Charlotte) to support the creation of a computer lab for staff training to enable the organization to better serve foster families and those without homes. -- The Asheville-Buncombe Community Relations Council (Asheville) to create a multilingual interactive Web site that will enable users to identify and apply for services. -- Shaw University (Raleigh) to enhance its Nanotechnology Initiative by upgrading the laboratory and funding minilab projects and high-level laboratory experimental activities. -- The YMI Cultural Center (Asheville) to improve online communication with the minority community about events and programs. -- The YMCA of Northwest North Carolina (Winston-Salem) to support a collaborative effort to provide computer-literacy classes to underserved youth, including tutorial software and financial/business-management instruction.
