U.S., Libyan top diplomats meet to beef up relations
Abstract:
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice met with her Libyan counterpart Abdelrahman Mohammed Shalgam here on Thursday, with the expectation of further improvement of bilateral relations.
"My meeting with Secretary Rice, we discussed bilateral issues. And regional issues, and even international issues," Shalgam told reporters after the meeting. "I think we can do together something for peace, especially regarding the issue of Darfur."
Following the talks between Rice and Shalgam, officials of the two countries also signed a science and technology cooperation deal.
It "is another step forward for our two countries. It will begin to build new bridges of understanding between our scientific, academic and technological communities," U.S. Under Secretary for Democracy and Global Affairs Paula Dobriansky said at the signing ceremony.
"We hope that this agreement that we signed today will give our citizens even greater opportunities and incentives to work together in fields ranging from oceanography to outerspace; from combating avian flu to harnessing the benefits of solar power; from understanding seismicity to applying nanotechnology in ways that enrich our lives," Dobriansky said.
