Abstract:
Electric City-Car and Truck to Show This Weekend at Maker Faire in Austin
As oil prices hit another record this week, an electric car dealership opened today deep in the heart of Texas. San Antonio has the latest dealership for electric vehicle pioneer ZAP (OTCBB: ZAAP).
The dealership will be showing the ZAP city-car and truck this weekend at Maker Faire in Austin, Texas. Maker Faire celebrates arts, crafts, engineering, science projects and the Do-It-Yourself (DIY) mindset. For more information, visit http://makerfaire.com .
ZAP Electric Cars of San Antonio ( http://www.zapcarsa.com ), located at Loop 1604 and Stone Oak Parkway, is offering the Xebra®, a three-wheel, four-door compact car and two-seat pickup. The vehicle was designed for gas-free, city driving up to 40 MPH and plugs into any normal household outlet.
The San Antonio dealership is owned by Tito Norris, a local orthodontist who was initially interested in owning a Xebra, but decided to open the dealership when he found there were no dealerships in the area. Norris thinks Texas, known for being an oil state, will be a receptive market for electric vehicles.
"The ZAP XEBRA was not designed as a replacement for gas cars but as an inexpensive alternative for the many short trips we all make everyday," said Norris. "It's more about conservation and saving money. These cars are perfect for around town driving and saving your gas car for when you need it. There are thousands of families, businesses and government agencies in Texas that could afford these electric vehicles today."
The vehicles are priced a little over $10,000 and are estimated to cost between one and three cents per mile depending on your electrical rates. ZAP says an electric car can reduce fueling, maintenance and operating costs, and overall they are about half the cost of owning a gasoline car.
Norris and dealership manager Nathaniel Mack planted a tree to mark the opening of the ZAP electric car dealership. Norris said the best way to mitigate CO2 emissions is using an electric car in place of a gas car; another good way is planting trees, so he is doing both. For every car sold, ZAP Cars of San Antonio will pledge 200 trees, which is how many trees it takes to offset the emissions from a conventional gas car. The pledge is in support of ZAP's Million Tree Challenge. For more information, visit http://www.zaptrees.org .
