Abstract:
Alternative transportation pioneer ZAP (OTCBB: ZAAP) has been allowed a patent and trademark for the ZAP XEBRA® city-speed electric car and truck from the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
ZAP designed the XEBRA to be a unique, new class of vehicle that could quickly and affordably fill the growing demand for gas-free motorized transportation. ZAP believes the XEBRA is the first practical, cost-effective electric vehicle.
"Electric cars are different from gas, so we decided to take a different approach to make something available today," said ZAP Chairman Gary Starr. "Users buy them as a second car, but they usually become the first car while the gas car is used occasionally."
Starr notes that the XEBRA was designed as a city vehicle to expand the niche for electric transportation. From families to fleets, ZAP says all kinds of car-buyers are starting to plug into the XEBRA. Parents in Oregon recently bought one for their 16-year-old, first-time driver.
"My favorite thing about the car is that I never have to ask my parents for gas money," writes Betsy from Salem, Oregon.
ZAP is now working to develop highway capable vehicles, buses and trucks in a new joint venture in China with Youngman Automotive Group. ZAP has an automotive business plan to market fuel-efficient vehicle technologies through auto dealerships and distributors globally under the ZAP brand.

A publicly owned Northern California Company, ZAP has created several innovative electric vehicles, starting in 1994 with its patented ZAP Power System kit for bicycles. Later, ZAP introduced complete electric bicycles under its POWERBIKE® and ElectriCruizer® brands. ZAP is perhaps best known for popularizing electric scooters in the late 90s with its ZAPPY® folding electric scooter. More recently, ZAP has patented its three-wheeled ZAPPY3, which incorporates an innovative wheel-motor design.
