Polyamides tackle tough challenges in the auto and electronics sectors

Abstract:
Polyamides will also play a key role in enabling manufacturers of ATVs, snowmobiles, watercraft, and other small gas engine-powered devices to meet new permeation limits being phased in by the EPA over the next few years. "Most of these applications currently employ blowmolded HDPE tanks, which don't meet the new regulations," says Sam Dahman, product development engineer at RTP Co. (Winona, MN). "The options are multiwall structures (incorporating EVOH or PA barrier layers), surface treatment, or nano-filled nylon 6 developed by RTP." The first two alternatives normally require investment in either multilayer blowmolding machinery or downstream surface treatment equipment, whereas nano-filled nylon can be processed on conventional single-layer blowmolding machinery.
