Sameer A. Beigh writes on a wonder called nanotechnology
Abstract:
The term "nanotechnology" generally refers to engineering and manufacturing at the molecular or at nanometer length scale (a nanometer is one billionth of a meter, about the width of 6 bonded carbon atoms). Rapidly increasing interest in the medical applications of nanotechnology has led to the emergence of a new field called ‘nanomedicine'.
Most broadly the nanomedicine is the process of diagnosing, treating and preventing disease and traumatic injury of relieving pain, and of preserving and improving human health, using molecular tools and molecular knowledge of the human body. Currently this may sound a bit science fiction-like, but scientists working on this technology say that they are not very far from manufacturing the prototypes. Perhaps it may surprise you to know that some of these miniature wonders are already on their way into the market.
Basic nanostructured materials, engineered enzymes and many products of biotechnology will be enormously useful in near-term medical applications. Dr. Shamim Ahmad, VC Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi and an eminent scientist and expert in nanoscience field from BITS Pillani, who introduced M.Sc. Nanotechnology in Jamia Hamdard, clearly demonstrated the potential use of nano molecules in various consumable and non-consumable products during 2 day national seminar on ‘Biotechnology and Human Welfare', held at Hamdard Convention Center, New Delhi on March 19-20, 2007.
However the full promise of nonomedicine is unlikely to arrive until after the development of precisely controlled or programmable medical nanomachines and nanorobots.
