Abstract:
Tour facilities, meet scientists at Center for Functional Nanomaterials
EVENT: Dedication of the Center for Functional Nanomaterials, a state-of-the-art facility opening at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory for the fabrication and study of materials at the nanoscale - on the order of billionths of a meter.
WHEN: Monday, May 21, 2007, beginning at 11 a.m.
WHERE: Center for Functional Nanomaterials, Brookhaven National Laboratory - on William Floyd Parkway, one-and-a-half miles north of Exit 68 of the Long Island Expressway, Upton, New York.
DETAILS: U.S. Congressman Timothy Bishop and Patricia Dehmer, DOE's Associate Director of Science for Basic Energy Sciences, will officially open Brookhaven Lab's new Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN), one of five nanoscale science research centers funded by DOE's Office of Science. CFN Director Emilio Mendez and Brookhaven Lab Director Samuel Aronson will speak about the CFN's vital role in stimulating nanoscience research in the northeastern U.S.
Scientists from Brookhaven Lab and academic and industrial organizations throughout the Northeast will use the CFN's unique array of tools to explore and develop nanoscale materials aimed at helping the U.S. achieve energy independence. Research areas include: nanostructured catalysts to improve the efficiency of fuel cells and manufacturing processes; technologies based on biological molecules to improve energy conversion and molecular self-assembly; and new electronic materials to improve solar energy conversion and storage devices. Following the dedication, reporters will be offered CFN tours, a lunchtime nanoscience tutorial, and one-on-one interviews with key scientists.
Please RSVP to Karen McNulty Walsh, (631) 344-8350, or Mona S. Rowe, (631) 344-5056.
For more information about the CFN, go to: http://www.bnl.gov/cfn/ .
Note: Members of the media are invited to attend this event. The dedication of the Center for Functional Nanomaterials is not open to the general public.

About Brookhaven National Laboratory
One of ten national laboratories overseen and primarily funded by the Office of Science of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Brookhaven National Laboratory conducts research in the physical, biomedical, and environmental sciences, as well as in energy technologies and national security. Brookhaven Lab also builds and operates major scientific facilities available to university, industry and government researchers. Brookhaven is operated and managed for DOE's Office of Science by Brookhaven Science Associates, a limited-liability company founded by the Research Foundation of State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University, the largest academic user of Laboratory facilities, and Battelle, a nonprofit, applied science and technology organization.
