NSTI Nanotech 2007 to Host Nano Golf Exhibit and Hands-on Demonstrations

SANTA CLARA, CA | Posted on May 11th, 2007

The Nano Science and Technology Institute (NSTI) today announced a special Nanotechnology in Golf Exhibit at the 10th annual NSTI Nanotech 2007 conference. The Golf Exhibit will be held at the Nanotechnology Innovation Showcase and Reception to be held in California at the Santa Clara Convention Center May 23, 2007.

"The Golf Exhibit at the Nanotechnology Innovation Showcase will feature golf clubs and golf balls with performance enhancing qualities made available through the application of nanotechnology and specifically, nanomaterials," said Bart Romanowicz, Executive Director of NSTI. "Though the Nanotech 2007 conference brings together thousands of the top companies, organizations and scientists involved in nanotech, for sessions dealing with issues like solving cancer, cleaning the world's water supply, providing clean energy…we also want to celebrate and recognize some of the less critical issues — like straightening out my slice off the tee. True Temper Sports and NanoDynamics will be showing people how to do just that."

True Temper Sports will demonstrate the Epic shaft found in leading golf clubs. The proprietary Nanofuse® material was made possible by harnessing the superior strength properties of nano-crystalline metals and fusing them at the molecular level with a composite polymer substrate. At only 20 nanometers, 1000 times smaller than the grain size of typical metallic structures, the nano-crystalline molecules are able to penetrate millions of specially engineered fissures within the composite polymer substrate creating the revolutionary Nanofuse material. The result is the strongest, lightest golf shaft ever created.

"While some shaft manufacturers have incorporated carbon nanotubes into composite shaft design, that use is only scratching the surface of the true potential of nanotechnology," states Graeme Horwood, Vice President of Engineering / R & D for Grafalloy. "Epic represents the first sporting goods product that's been truly enabled by recent advances in utilizing complete nanotechnology. With Nanofuse, we are introducing an entirely new material into golf shaft design that offers the advantages of both steel and graphite without any of the inherent limitations associated with each."

NanoDynamics will be demonstrating their revolutionary new golf balls. "The ball integrates advanced materials, a new type of construction, and a focus on physics to improve performance," explains Doug DuFaux, one of the ball's inventors and Director of Intellectual Property for NanoDynamics.

The ball is constructed around a hollow metal core — what DuFaux refers to as, "a platform technology," likely to fundamentally transform golf ball design and manufacture — to distribute the ball weight to the outside, instead of having the weight concentrated in the center as in conventional balls. In addition, the ball is engineered to improve the efficiency of the energy transfer from the club head to the ball.

"We are hopeful that the leading ball manufacturers will see the advantages of incorporating a hollow metal core into their own designs," commented Keith Blakely, CEO of NanoDynamics. "By combining the polymer and manufacturing skills that they have developed over the past thirty years with our patented technology, a new generation of ball technology can be brought to market."
