State higher-education chiefs meet in historic first
Abstract:
Gov. Patrick called this "the start of a conversation" and made it clear he expects the individual schools to develop their five-year plans with an eye on what each other is doing, as well as with an eye toward 20 years down the road. "Show us the larger context," he said, encouraging the colleges to compare notes and exchange ideas, especially for identifying their unique strengths and finding ways to consolidate operations to save money.
In exchange, he said, he will back efforts to bolster the public higher eduction system because it represents a large part of Massachusetts' historical strength. Other states have oil or agribusiness; Massachusetts has education and ingenuity, he said. That means the future lies in "such things as nanotechnology, clean energy, stem-cell research and biomedicine," he said.
