Mizzou Research May Hold Key To Saving Troops From IEDs
Abstract:
Breakthrough research at the University of Missouri - Columbia may hold the key to saving the lives of American troops from improvised explosive devices in Iraq.
"You could send out a signal and get an acoustic image back to determine an IED. You could actually use a signal device to neutralize it before we reach it," said engineering student Steve Apperson.
How small are the particles with which researchers work? The nanogold particles are one millionth the size of a strand of hair.
A DNA sensor made from the particles may one day enable police to instantly detect DNA at the scene of a crime and in the back of Gangopadhyay's mind, minute medical sensors that can detect cancer and even HIV.
