Use of Nanotechnology in Hydrogen Production
Abstract:
Hydrogen and oxygen, the two main elements making up water, are now been used to produce electricity as well. In fact, hydrogen is the main component that is being used to produce electricity in a non polluted way, under the tag of renewable energy. A study headed by Walter Varhue, a team of scientists at the University of Vermont showed that nanotechnology could be used to create a membrane that in process could be used in production and use of "fuel cell economy".
In a statement released recently, Walter Varhue pointed towards a direction where solar models could be extensively used over vast fields to store electricity that could be used to break up water into oxygen and hydrogen. Sunlight is an extremely effective way to split water up, but the process is not very easy. It takes a lot of hard work and accuracy to assure that the reactions take place in the proper fashion. However, nanotechnology can help ease this process to a large degree. According to Varhue, "If the current efficiency of 6 percent can be increased to 10 percent, you could have farms across the country making hydrogen instead of growing corn."
