Kovsies studies micro-organisms in deep mines

Abstract:
he University of the Free State (UFS) has been awarded a contract to research prehistoric micro-organisms which live under extreme conditions in deep mineshafts, the university said on Wednesday.

Van Heerden said these "new and unique" products might yield anti-cancer, anti-bacterial and anti-viral cures; could throw light on nanotechnology; and help clean up harmful metals and other toxic waste.
