Nanoscale lithium-ion battery technology promises big things
Abstract:
Ever have the desire to power your data warehouse on batteries (at least as a backup solution)? Ever desire to have a plug-in hybrid truck or SUV? Or how about a full-sized bus or camper? Well, that's what a new start-up company is talking about with its über-enhanced, nanotechnology-injected lithium-ion batteries.
The battery technology start-up company called A123Systems in Cambridge, Massachusetts (right next to Geek.com's hometown of Boston) claims its new lithium-ion battery solution charges faster and provides greater power due to using nanotechnology at the lowest levels of the manufacturing process (see the technology overview). Yet-Ming Chiang, MIT professor and the company's founder, had this to say on the future of nanotechnology batteries: "This really is new battery technology. We have capabilities that five years ago power tool people didn't believe was possible."
