Tech Watch: GM Readies "Smart Materials" for 2010 Vehicles
Abstract:
GM is working with HRL Laboratories and the University of Michigan to develop vehicle applications for the new smart materials. But GM is not the only automaker delving into futuristic materials and their applications. A month ago, Ford, in collaboration with Boeing and Northwestern University, announced it is accelerating its push into nanotechnology, which will allow the automaker to create such things as lightweight metals and plastics, as well as nano-paints with greater customization potential. Nanotechnology is the science of manipulating metals at the atomic or molecular level.
