Planet82 Singled Out for Outstanding Innovation; Highly Sensitive Sensor Takes Photos in the Dark Without a Flash
-- Planet82 announced today that In-Stat's Microprocessor Report (MPR), an internationally recognized newsletter written by leading technology analysts, awarded Planet82's Single carrier Modulation Detector (SMPD) with a 2006 MPR Analysts' Choice Award for Innovation. The eighth annual MPR Analysts' Choice Awards honor innovative products and technology that enhances the design or manufacturing of microprocessors and related semiconductors in the future.
In-Stat analysts selected Planet82 for inventing a highly sensitive image sensor with the ability to take pictures in the dark without a flash. "Planet82's SMPD image sensor breaks new ground with its unique ability to combine existing imaging technology with powerful nanotechnology, making it 2,000 times more light-sensitive and 50 percent smaller than traditional CMOS and CCD sensors."
Until now, taking a picture in the dark without a flash would yield a dark photograph. Planet82's SMPD possesses the ability to take clear images even when the light level is less than 1 lux (or up to 0.1 lux), the point at which human eyes can barely distinguish images.

Halfhill, the senior editor and analyst of In-Stat, the publisher of Microprocessor Report. "SMPD technology amplifies the output of digital image sensors, improving their sensitivity by about three orders of magnitude."
SMPD-enabled devices take clearer, crisper images in low-light situations without the distortion or energy-drain of a flash. Planet82 SMPD technologies include a black and white, full-color VGA and two mega pixel color sensors.
