Isoun takes practical technology to Africa

Abstract:
Will Nigeria's Science and Technology potential ever be harnessed? The answer is a positive yes! Activities of past two weeks in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, will remain a golden historical moment of technology achievement for Nigeria. As if to say, "the time is ripe for technology leapfrogging", Professor Tunner Isoun, the able Honorable Minister of Science and Technology and longest serving cabinet member in the current government dispensation, seemed to have crowned the performance of his tenure of office with ‘Technology Proof of Concept' when he descended on Addis Ababa like a colossus, for the Joint African Union-Economic Commission for Africa (AU-ECA) Science, Technology and Innovation Exhibition (22-30 January, 2007).

More than ever before, this is the time to explore the numerous windows of opportunities in Science and Technology (especially, Information Technology, Space Science Biotechnology and Nanotechnology) and focus on rolling out patents of our discoveries in Science and Technology. Finally, constructive, adequate and sustainable funding for Science and Technology Development and in particular, Research, Design and Development (RD&D) in Nigeria/Africa must be made a national/continental priority. To the IT professionals in particular, the fundamental concern (to NCS) is: who will become the next Minister of Science and Technology? just as CPN is concerned about the emergence of the next Minister for Education. Both Professional segments agree that it is critical that whoever replaces Prof Turner Isoun, and indeed, the Minister of Education, should be a thorough breed IT Professional.
