Ford's leaders facing slump with a smile
Abstract:
The dinner Fields hosted was at Northwestern University, where Ford helps fund a nanotechnology program. Haven't the foggiest what nanotechnology is, except that it must be costly. When a machine that cooled molecules to 400 degrees below zero that we were leaning on started to roll out of control, Fields turned and said, "That thing is worth $2.5 million."
But he said it with a smile, while we wrung our hands.
Fields said nanotech is being used to find lighter-weight materials for vehicles; light weight means higher mileage. He also said the program is looking into two other developments for cars: one, a permanent coating on the windshield to repel water and eliminate wipers, and the other a paint for all body panels that resists scratching.
