Tech's Finest Minds Bet on Genetic ID Cards...
Abstract:
So what are some of the scientific and technological advances the IEEE fellows think might be around the corner? The survey, as summarized by BoingBoing editor and IFTF research affiliate David Pescovitz, and co-author Marina Gorbis, identified five major themes, or "main arteries," for scientific and technological advancements in the next 50 years.
These included: a shift in computing power and network connectivity from scarcity to abundance; the advent of a new sensory infrastructure by way of tiny smart sensors which will be embedded in everyday objects and places; new modular, scalable, and lightweight grids that will replace centralized infrastructures; new micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) and bio-systems that will be integrated with nanotechnology; and finally, genetic engineering and bioinformatics that will be applied to create new life forms and reshape existing ones.
