Moving Marvels
Abstract:
Says Goodyear’s Joe Gingo: “In the future, we’ll see even more significant advances in materials science that will yield strong, safe, light, smart, efficient and easily customized tires. Nanoscience will continue to lead us to new reinforcing materials, such as Kevlar and carbon fiber. Some of the materials we are currently working on include nanoclays, nanoscale rubber gels and smart materials that can be adapted to the needs of a tire. For example, the material might become stiffer as a tire builds up heat.”
Finally, the micro-science crowd has even gone as far as saying that, by using nanotechnology, tires could be made to last for the life of the car.
