Abstract:
The institute has an important cross-disciplinary focus on drug discovery and developing nano-biotech sensors. These tiny devices will use novel materials to link exquisitely sensitive protein "sensors" such antibodies or cellular receptors to microelectronic circuits that will report via microscopic radio transmitters.
Biocompatible nanodevices will monitor pathological processes within the body; others may detect infections in livestock, check crop health, or alert environmental authorities to water or air contamination.
Much of the institute's advanced analytical equipment is for probing the structure of nature’s own nanodevices: the protein molecules that ultimately mediate all life processes.
