A Novel Approach to Directed Assembly of Nanowires
Abstract:
Nanowires are an important tool in the semiconductor industry. They can be fashioned to act as sensors for electromagnetic radiation, magnetic fields, chemical and biological species, and could be used as laser sensors, magnetic read heads, hydrogen sensors and sensors for normal biological molecules (i.e., glucose) or abnormal molecules (bacteria, viruses or chemical weapons). In addition, semiconductor wire deposition could allow new computing architectures or other functional devices such as LEDs for chip-to-chip communication.
Potential markets for the sensors in particular are huge and growing — hydrogen sensors will be critical to the coming "hydrogen economy." Glucose sensors will become a large market as a larger proportion of the global population survives to an age where Type 2 diabetes becomes a major issue.
