Nanowire gene chips

Abstract:
Selective detection of DNA sequences could be a central tool for genetic medicine. Silicon nanocircuits offer a new, convenient way to do it. A silicon-based sensor for the sequence-specific detection of DNA in very small quantities has been developed by researchers at the Hewlett-Packard Laboratories in Palo Alto, California. The sensor uses nanoscale silicon components for the electrical detection of DNA, and can discriminate single-base mismatches in strands of DNA 12 bases long, at concentrations of 25 picomoles (25 X 10-12 M).
