Abstract:
On May 31, the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters will announce the 2018 Kavli Prize Laureates in Astrophysics, Nanoscience, and Neuroscience. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the prestigious $1 million Kavli Prizes, which recognize scientists for brilliant breakthroughs in our understanding of existence at its biggest, smallest, and most complex scales.

In New York City, the World Science Festival will hold an invite-only breakfast featuring a conversation on the important work that the Kavli Prize honors in Astrophysics, Nanoscience, and Neuroscience. The program will accompany a live satellite feed of the award announcement in Oslo, Norway.

This year’s keynote speaker for the breakfast will be the Honorable Shirley Ann Jackson,
President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and acclaimed theoretical physicist. Among her many groundbreaking achievements, Dr. Jackson is the first African-American woman to have earned a doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in any field, the second African-American woman in the United States to earn a doctorate in physics, and the first to be awarded the National Medal of Science, the nation's highest honor for contributions in science and engineering. Dr. Jackson also served as Co-Chair of the President's Intelligence Advisory Board under President Obama, as well as serving as a member of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. The World Science Festival breakfast will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 31 at Grand Hall, NYU Global Center, New York University in New York City, with a free, live webcast of the event available to the public.

The Kavli Prize is a partnership between The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, The Kavli Foundation (U.S.), and The Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research. It is named after Fred Kavli, a Norwegian-born U.S. philanthropist and founder of The Kavli Foundation.
