New Step towards Smart Treatment of Breast Cancer by Gold Nanoparticles

Tehran, Iran | Posted on October 22nd, 2015

The nanodrug can be used in humans in the treatment of breast cancer through opto-thermotherapy method in case it passes laboratorial and quality control stages. Increasing therapy efficiency and reducing side effects during the treatment are among the advantages of the application of this nanodrug as well as reducing therapeutic costs.

The aim of the present study is to produce and develop a new nanodrug to treat breast cancer smartly through opto-thermotherapy method. Some parameters are used in this method that create heat in a local manner by adsorbing light, and the produced heat kills cancer cells containing the materials. It seems that the nanodrug is able to overcome the majority of the problems in the common cancer therapy methods.

Bombesid peptide has been used in the production of the nanodrug as a targeting therapeutic molecule, which has been attached to gold nanobars by using Nanothinks™ acid. After quality control and in-vitro studies, the product was injected to a rat suffering from cancer tumor, and its therapeutic ability was studied through opto-thermotherapy method by using near infrared beams.

Gold nanoparticles, specially the bar structure, has high sorption capacity at the range of infrared, which diffuses deeply into the tissues. The beam does not harm the healthy tissues. However, when gold nanoparticles receive the beam inside the tissues, they convert the beam into heat in an effective manner, which results in miniature explosions inside the cells, and as a result, cancer cells are killed.

Results of the research have been published in Nanotechnology, vol. 26, 2015, pp. 1-10.
