Production of Magnetic Nanoparticles with New Structures in Iran

Tehran, Iran | Posted on November 13th, 2014

The method proposed by the researchers is cost-effective and simple, and it is considered as green chemistry due the application of palm oil.

Numerous efforts have been lately made to promote the application of green chemistry methods by using environmentally friendly substances for the production of nanomaterials. The efforts included increasing the use of plants or fruit extracts as stabilizer or coating agents to control the growth of crystals. Chemical reactions take place much faster through these methods, and they have very high efficiency. The methods also reduce the costs of the production of nanomaterials.

In this research, barium hexaferrite nanoparticles were synthesized through self-combustion sol-gel method. High efficiency, increasing the reaction speed and reducing consumptive cost are among the advantages of the method. Natural reducers, including palm oil, were used in the production of nanoparticles.

In addition to high magnetic saturation properties, the produced nanoparticles have perfect chemical stability and very good corrosion resistance.

Results of the research show that the reducing power of natural materials is equal to that of commercial products. On the other hand, the production of nanomaterials by using natural reactants creates new and diversified nanostructures. Barium hexaferrite nanoparticles were produced for the first time in this research in different shapes, including star, rod and plate.

Results of the research have been published in Ceramics International, vol. 40, issue 10, 2014, pp. 15685-15691.
