Abstract:
Iranian researchers from Shiraz University in association with researchers from Shiraz University of Medical Sciences succeeded in the production of cement nanopowder in a research the results of which can be used in bone and dental recovery.
The researchers believe that the proposed nanopowder has higher quality than the foreign-made similar samples in the market, and it can be produced with lower cost.
WMTA silicate calcium cement is one of the highest quality materials used in the filling of the end of tooth roots. The aim of the research was to improve the quality of the cement, and to study its production capacity in the country to become self-sufficient in this regard.
One of the most important problems in the application of silicate calcium cement is its high setting time. The setting time has not decreased yet despite the fact that numerous researchers have been carried out. In addition, physical properties or biocompatibility of the cement have been affected in case of modification in the structure. In this research, one of the components of the cement, which plays an important role in the initial setting of the cement, was chosen as variable to minimize the effects of the additives.
Results of the research showed that reduction in particle size and addition of the powder of tricalcium aluminate nanoparticles to the raw material improve the bone growth properties. Among other advantages of the product, mention can be made of significant reduction in the setting time of the cement in large industries, although this behavior of the cement requires more tests.
The researchers believe that nanometric size of the powders provides more effective area, and it increases the release of calcium ion from silicate calcium cement. This fact increases calcium ion concentration in the growth area of the cement, and consequently, helps the creation of bones. The abovementioned facts can be considered among the reasons for the faster modification of bone damages in the group of mixed nano silicate calcium in the presence of only 2% of tricalcium aluminate nanoparticles.
Results of the research have been published in Journal of Endodontics, vol. 40, issue 5, 2014, pp. 648-651.
