Abstract:
Iranian researchers used nanotechnology and designed nerve-guiding canals which are appropriate for the recovery of damaged nerves.
The product is biocompatible and biodegradable and after passing the complementary tests, the canal can be used in neurology surgery sections.
Damages caused by car accidents, sport injuries or natural catastrophes such as earthquake result in damage to nerves. Therefore, approaches, including the production of canals, to guide the nerves have attracted the attention of researchers. In the present study, a nerve-guiding canal has been made by using a mixture of nanobioglass and gelatin, and it has been used in the treatment of nerves.
The production of nerve-guiding canals by using nanobioglass has been carried out for the first time in Iran and in the world. Therefore, achieving significant results and successfully carrying out nerve recovery in laboratory animals are signs of entrance to a new level of the applications of this material. It is hoped that the results can lead to the production of an invaluable product with numerous applications for the treatment of patients who suffer from nerve damages and people with disabilities.
Taking into consideration the nanometric size of the bioglass used in this research, higher surface area is imposed to the outside environment (including cells and intra-tissue liquids), and the bioactivity increases. On the other hand, it enables the producer during the production of polymeric compounds to add more volume of the bioglass as the bioactive filler to the polymeric bed. Therefore, there will be no inconsistency in the interface of particles and the bed.
Results of the research have been published in Journal of Materials Science: Materials in Medicine, vol. 25, issue 2, February 2014, pp. 363-373.
