Abstract:
Norman J. Pattiz, chairman of the Lawrence Livermore National Security, LLC (LLNS) and Los Alamos National Security, LLC (LANS) Boards of Governors, today announced that Kimberly Budil has been appointed by the University of California (UC) as vice president for Laboratory Management in the UC Office of the President and as an executive committee governor on the LANS and LLNS Boards of Governors. Her appointment takes effect May 1, 2014. Budil will chair the LLCs' Nominations and Compensation Committee. She replaces Glenn Mara, who retires from the university on April 30.
"Kim is a proven and respected scientist and manager in the national and global security arenas and in thenational lab and science communities," said Pattiz. "She has tremendous depth and breadth of experience across a wide range of scientific programs and a strong commitment to and understanding of the critical roles that Lawrence Livermore and Los Alamos National labs play in service to our nation."
"I am truly honored to be appointed as UC vice president for Laboratory Management and as an executive committee governor on the LLC Boards of Governors," said Budil. "I look forward to working with the national labs, their federal sponsors and the LLC Boards to continue the labs' exceptional scientific work in support of national and global security."
Budil is a 27-year employee of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). She is program manager of LLNL's Nuclear Counterterrorism Program in the Global Security Principal Directorate. Over her career, Budil has held roles of increasing management responsibility in a variety of programs, including Global Security, Weapons and Complex Integration, the National Ignition Facility, and Physical and Life Sciences. She has additionally served in two LLNL assignments in Washington, DC, first at the National Nuclear Security Administration in the Office of Defense Science and then as a senior adviser to the Department of Energy under secretary for science. Budil has a Ph.D. in applied science/engineering from the University of California, Davis and a bachelor's in physics from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Pattiz thanked Mara for his 40 years of service to the nation, the University or California and the national laboratories. Mara has served as a university-appointed executive committee governor on the LANS/LLNS Boards for the past two years. "Glenn's extensive senior management experience within the national security enterprise and at the labs has made him exceptional partner for all of us," said Pattiz. "He has epitomized the university's commitment to science in the national interest, and we wish him all the best in his retirement."
