Abstract:
Iranian researchers from Science and Research Branch of Islamic Azad University used a type of bone cement and produced a material that is capable of carrying various types of drugs, including bone growth agents, antibiotics and anticancer medicine.
The results of the research can be used in the fields of pharmaceutics, medicine and dentistry.
The material can carry various types of drugs due to the lack of the presence of thermal operation in the production process of the cement and its isotherm hardening reactions. It is also able to release the loaded drugs in the injured tissue in a controllable manner during relatively time-consuming process.
According to the researchers, when ascorbic acid is added to the cement structure as a trigger to osteoblasts, the obtained material may be able to persuade bone creation properties. These materials can treat bone damages created by different causes in a short notice.
Results showed that as ascorbic acid is added to the cement, the hardening time decreases. For instance, hardening time is 35 minutes in a sample without ascorbic acid while the hardening time reduces to 25 minutes in a sample with 200 µg/mL of ascorbic acid.
Pressure strength of the samples increases too as ascorbic acid is added to the sample structures. Pressure strength of a sample without ascorbic acid was reported 16.26 MPa while the sample containing 200 µg/mL of ascorbic acid had pressure strength of 25.16 MPa. SEM results showed as the amount of ascorbic acid and the time of floating increase, more apatite is formed in the structure. A decrease is observed in the amount of ascorbic acid release as its concentration increases. A sample containing 50 µg/mL of ascorbic acid had the highest release percentage.
Results of the research have been published in Ceramics International, vol. 40, issue 3, August 2013, pp. 3961-3968.
