Leading Scientists Discuss New Nanotechnology and Sustainability Research at Columbia University, Oct. 2-3, 2013

New York, NY | Posted on September 29th, 2013

WHAT: "Nanotechnology and Sustainability: New Research in Italy and the United States"

WHO: Scientists from leading academic institutes and research centers from Italy and the Unites States

WHEN: Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2:00-6:00 p.m.; Thursday, Oct. 3, 9:00 a.m.-6:30 p.m.

WHERE: The Italian Academy, 1161 Amsterdam Avenue, New York, NY 10027

NOTE: RSVP is required to attend at www.italianacademy.columbia.edu/events-nano.html where the full conference schedule and information are available. Contact Sabina Lee for media RSVP and interview requests.

Addressing global sustainability issues, including energy production and control of global warming, Columbia University will host a conference on nanotechnology and sustainability featuring leading scientists whose latest discoveries are from collaborative and joint research efforts in nanotechnology, materials and energy between the United States and Italy. The conference is free and open to the public.

Topics of discussion range from novel nanoscale materials, including graphene, as well as boron nitride, molybdenum disulfide, organic films, nanotubes and other functional materials. Energy-related applications based on these concepts will also be introduced, including all organic photovoltaics for renewable and sustainable energy production; exploring viable routes for an effective market impact of third generation photovoltaics; and experiments aimed at the splitting of water molecules to give oxygen, (and therefore molecular hydrogen), ideal properties for clean energy generation.

Sponsored by the Columbia Energy Frontier Research Center, the Italian Academy, the Office of the Executive Vice President for Research at Columbia University, the Embassy of Italy and Melchionna and Gandolfo, LLP, the conference features following speakers:

• Federico Capasso (Physics, Harvard)
• Antonio Facchetti (Chemistry, Northwestern)
• Giuseppe Gigli (Physics, CNR-Nano and University of Lecce)
• Paolo Fornasiro (Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, ICCOM-CNR, Consortium INSTM, U. of Trieste)
• Tony Heinz (Physics and Electrical Engineering, Columbia)
• Philip Kim (Physics, Columbia)
• Liberato Manna (Nanochemistry, IIT Genova)
• Elisa Molinari (Physics, CNR-Nano and University of Modena)
• Alberto Morgante (Physics, CNR-IOM and University of Trieste)
• Michele Muccini (CNR-ISMN, Bologna)
• Chris Murray (Chemistry, UPenn)
• Richard Osgood (Applied Physics and Electrical Engineering, Columbia)
• Vittorio Pellegrini (CNR-Nano and Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa)
• Maurizio Prato (Chemistry, University of Trieste)
• Latha Venkataraman (Applied Physics and Applied Mathematics, Columbia)
• Andrea Young (Physics, MIT)
