Abstract:
India has overtaken Germany in fourth place, behind the China, United States, and South Korea in Nano S&T publications for the year 2012, according to an analysis of global trends in Nano S&T Publications by the Centre for Knowledge Management of Nanoscience & Technology (CKMNT).
CKMNT analysis reveals that the top 10 countries in Nano S&T publications for the year 2012 are China, USA, South Korea, India, Germany, Japan, France, the Islamic Republic of Iran, England and Spain. While nine out of the top 10 countries were already belonging to the group of top ten in 2011, Spain has joined the group of top ten for the first time while Taiwan is the only country leaving the top 10 group in 2012. China maintains its 2011 position as number 1 making it to the top 10 on all four indices such as top ten citations, top ten authors, top ten publishing institutions and top ten funding agencies related to nanoscience & nanotechnology. USA ranks 2nd in the Nano S&T output indices, despite being the home of world class nanotech R&D institutions and universities with good linkages among academia and industries and bilateral collaborations resulting in numerous scientific Nano S&T publications. China also ranks 1st in patents publication activity followed by USA through the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). South Korea retains its 2011 position and ranked as number 3 among North America, European Union and Asian countries in 2012. India attained 4th position in 2012, close to Germany, moving up in its ranking from 6th in 2011. India has strengths across the board, particularly large R&D funding in nanoscience & technology, highly qualified R&D manpower (leading to a prolific output of scientific publications), public-private partnerships, venture capital commitment and a skilled labour force engaged in research and patenting. Japan is ranked 6th in 2012, a drop of one place from its 5th position in 2011. Iran ranked at 8th position in the Nano S&T publications in 2012, maintaining its previous year's position. Iran is leading the rankings among the Middle East countries in terms of Nano S&T publications and has shown the largest year-to-year annual growth rate worldwide. England occupies the 9th position in 2012, up one place from 10th rank in 2011.
