The 5th edition of Bangalore Nano, organized by The Department of IT, BT and S&T, Government of Karnataka under the guidance of Vision Group on Nanotechnology, concluded on a high note today. The event showcased a plethora of discussions, lectures and presentations on Nanoscience and Nanotechnology.
Cumulatively, organizations from 12 countries like France, Germany, USA, UK, Japan Italy, Ireland, Czech Republic, Saudi Arabia etc., participated in the 5th Bangalore Nano.
Prof. C.N.R. Rao, FRS, National Research Professor; Linus Pauling Research Professor; Honorary President, JNCASR, said, "The overwhelming response to Bangalore Nano reiterates the deep penetration that Nano Science and Nano technology have made in India and Bangalore. India is in the top 5 destinations for Nanoscience and Technology. There's a sharp rise is the number of scientists, research scholars and technocrats pursuing Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. We are at a stage wherein inventions are being transformed into innovative products to the good of common man."
Appreciating the Government's role he said, "The Nano Mission (Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India) has played a significant role in giving a boost to nanotechnology. And both the Central Government and the Government of Karnataka have been very proactive in supporting and funding science and especially nanotechnology."
Prof. Sir Richard Friend - Cavendish Professor of Physics, Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, UK, said, "Bangalore Nano is a prized and valued event for the nano-community and the event has grown from strength to strength over the years. Bangalore is also recognised as a source for high quality Young Scientists and the caliber of students coming out from the city are of the highest standards."
Shri. I.S.N. Prasad, IAS - Principal Secretary to Government, Department of IT, BT and S&T, Government of Karnataka, said, "Bangalore Nano is now acknowledged as the top platform to deliberate on Nanoscience and on Nanotechnology. The sheer number of participants in the 5th Bangalore Nano reflects the popularity of the event across academia and industry. This has by far been the most successful Bangalore Nano with largest participation of delegates, exhibitors, students, poster entries - the event recorded 700 Delegates. Bangalore Nano is now become a "must attend" event for the Nano Community."
Further he said, "Bangalore Nano is a platform for deliberating the science, nurturing technology and launch products. It has grown significantly since it's inception, it is now seen as India's most authoritative forum for Nanotechnolgy. The event recognises the best in research giving an opportunity to present their ideas in the form of posters, recognise and reward innovations with various awards and enables those innovations to reach the investor community and end-users with the Research Industry Collaboration Hub (RICH) programme."
In the opening plenary, Prof. C.N.R. Rao and Dr. K. Kasturirangan conferred the Bangalore Nano National Award 2012 on Prof. G.U. Kulkarni, Chemistry & Physics of Materials Unit and DST Unit on Nanoscience, JNCASR.
Speaking on Bangalore Nano, Dr. K. Kasturirangan, said, "We don't have another such event in the country and it draws the best of the talent from all over globe. Bangalore Nano not only symbolizes but is really the way forward in taking advantage of Nano technology."
The India Nanotech Innovation Award was presented to Prof. T Pradeep, Professor, Department of Chemistry, IIT, Madras, Award Discovery: Discovery of noble metal, nanoparticle-based drinking water purification methods. The "Malhotra Weikfield Foundation - Bangalore Nano Young Scientist Award" were given to Six budding scientists from leading institutions in India. It was interesting to note that Five of the Six awardees were young women and Prof. CNR Rao felt that it augurs well for the nurturing of science in the country.
Young Scientists and Researchers from 60 Institutions like IISc, JNCASR, IITs, NCBS and international Universities showcased several new concepts and ideas in the Poster Session. Overall 120 posters were displayed by the researchers. First Place was bagged by Kasinath Ojha from IIT Delhi, Second Place was bagged by Sakshath Sadashivaiah, from IISc Bangalore The third place, given to three posters, were R. Srinivasa,National Bureau of Agriculturally Important Insects, K Gopalakrishnan from JNCASR and Sreerekha PR from Amrita Centre for Nanosciences and Molecular Medicine.
The tradeshow featured 43 exhibitors from across the globe. Visitor interaction at the expo was phenomenal with over 2000 plus footfalls.
Six start-ups were given a platform to pitch for investments or collaborations from the VCs and Institutions under the Research Industry Collaboration Hub (RICH) programme. NoPo Nanotechnologies and NanoSniff Technologies launch their products in the 5th Bangalore Nano. NoPo Nanotechnologies launched Nickel Carbonyl Detector and NoPo HiPCO's Nanotubes. "NanoSniff Technologies introduced OmniCant - a table top instrument for studying resistive MEMS and NEMS sensors.
In the B2B partnering tool "Interlinx" a total of 60 meetings were facilitated of these 40 meetings between Indian companies and 20 meetings with International companies.
Bangalore Nano 2012 featured some of the well known and Internationally acclaimed speakers such as Prof. Sir Richard Friend, FRS, FREng, Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge, UK; Dr. Michael L. Klein, Temple University, Philadelphia, USA; Prof. Dr. Masakazu Aono, National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) Ibaraki, Japan; Prof. Sandip Tiwari, Cornell University, New York, USA; Prof. Martin Hegner, School of Physics, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland; Prof. Shangjr (Felix) Gwo, Department of Physics, National Tsing Hua University, Hsinchu, Taiwan; Prof. Rao R. Tummala, 3D Systems Packaging Research Center, Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia, USA and from India Prof. Ajay Sood, IISc; Dr. G. Sundararajan, ARCI; Prof. V. Ramgopal Rao, IIT-Bombay; Mr. Aninda Moitra, President & MD, Applied Materials India; Dr. Manu Jaggi, Dabur Research Foundation; Prof. Rudra Pratap, CeNSE-IISc; Dr. Alok Dhawan, Ahmedabad University; Dr. Mano Manoharan, GE Global Research; Dr. Kota Murali, IBM India; Prof. T. Pradeep, IIT-Madras.
"Nano for the Young" had an overwhelming response, this session was attended by over 500 graduate students. The session inspired the youngsters, who were highly influenced by the panel of scientists when they shared their views and answered the questions posed by the youngsters.
Dr. T. Ramasami, Secretary, Department of Science and Technology, said, "NanoMission and initiatives like Bangalore Nano has created great interest & enthusiasm among young people. India is amongst top 5 -6 nations in the world in terms of creation of knowledge in science and specifically nanoscience area. It is one thing to create new knowledge but applying that meaningfully is another thing. Nanoscience and technology will get its value only when the technology is applied. So an event like Bangalore Nano tries to bring academia, research and industry together and create a situation of symbiosis. The conference has added a new dimension and certainly Bangalore too over a period of time has emerged as centre where knowledge creation and wealth creation go hand in hand.. Bangalore Nano creates that ecosystem and we have a long way to go but we sure have begun well."
Prof. A.K. Sood - Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, said, "Bangalore Nano is a collaborative event between research , academic fraternity and industry. This is what is different from other conferences in Nanotechnology. We try to keep a balance between Excellence Science leading to innovations and applications and we choose the program to reflect all the aspects which really contributes to the growth of this filed."
Tom Warwick, General Manager, Nanofabrication Division, Nano Ink"This is our second Bangalore Nano Participation. This year we already have more than 50 leads. There is a range of interest being shown by visitors several people have shown interest to purchase tools."
Kirk Barnes, Global Development Executive, Nano Professor, said, "The feedback so far has been great for Nano Professor. This is our first time attending Bangalore Nano. So being able to have access to the thought leaders in Nanotechnology as well as all the colleges and Universities in one place is a tremendous value. So thus far its been very fruitful. We hope to come back next year as well."
R. Giridhara Gopalan, Hind High Vacuum, said, "The whole exhibition is very good and there has been more participation, visitors and delegates. The momentum seems to have picked up. I think Nanotechnology in India is taking off which is a very good sign. We have seen a lot of enquiries at our booth, more and more institutions and universities are interested to do research in Nano. Its been a great opportunity for nano equipment suppliers and those associated with the nano industry. We will definitely be a part of the next Bangalore Nano as well."
