Abstract:
P2i's impressive development within electronic manufacturing has been acknowledged with an announcement from the Global Business Excellence (GBE) Awards. P2i has received the title of ‘Outstanding New Product/Service' for its innovative development of the Aridion™ liquid repellent nano-coating technology for high volume manufacturing.
Winning a GBE Award is a mark of business excellence as public and private sector organizations across the world compete to demonstrate an ability to work smarter than their competitors to create a business edge. P2i impressed the award judges with its commercial proposition and significant cost benefits brought to customers by the application of the nano-coating to completed devices at the end of the manufacturing process.
Andrew Areoff, founder of Areoff, a multi-award winning insurance and financial services web design agency, and chairman of the judges, said: "For the thousands, or even millions, of us who have dropped our mobile phone in water, perhaps in the sink or in a swimming pool, and found to our dismay that it doesn't work anymore, this is a technology that will be hugely appreciated. P2i has developed an ultra-thin and invisible nano-coating called Aridion™.
"Once applied to electronic devices it protects them from the effects of water and corrosion damage." Areoff continued. "It has already made a huge impact on the hearing aid industry with 60% of the global production of hearing devices now protected by Aridion™. Let's hope smartphone manufacturers adopt this new technology at the same rate."
The Aridion™ technology works by applying an ultra-thin coating to a device, lowering the surface energy so when liquids come into contact with the product they remain attracted to themselves, not the surface. This makes it difficult for water to penetrate the devices, and if moisture does reach the internal components, the water moves away from the surface instead of spreading out and sticking onto the device where it would cause long term corrosion damage.
Dr Stephen Coulson, Chief Technology Officer, P2i, explains: "One of the big problems when you combine electronic devices with moisture, water or even sweat, is the appearance of corrosion damage. Corrosion damage occurs because the liquid inside the phone spreads out on the surface and causes what's known as electrochemical migration. This occurs where voltage passes around the electronic circuitry in the presence of water. Aridion™ dramatically increases the reliability of electronic devices by providing superior liquid repellency, protecting them from corrosion and water damage.
"We are really honored to win the Global Business Excellence award which recognizes that it is not just the potential of the technology which makes Aridion™ such an exciting product, but the capability of the company to validate this solution with high volume manufacturing, that makes it an outstanding new service."

About P2i
P2i is the world leader in liquid repellent nano-coating technology.
P2i has two offices in the United States. P2i Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of P2i based in Savannah, Georgia, houses R&D, machine build, service and support, processing and business administration. P2i Processing Center Inc., located in Beaverton, Oregon, is fully equipped with P2i processing facilities.
With a customer focused and global outlook, P2i has expanded into Asia with an office in Singapore to maximize the service and support provided to manufacturers in this area. Additionally, P2i has over 100 nano-coating installations located within major manufacturing centers around the world.
P2i was established in 2004 to commercialize liquid-repellent treatments developed by the UK’s Ministry of Defence (with headquarters based in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom). Now on a commercial scale, P2i’s patented process has been successfully applied to a wide range of products in a wide range of markets including Lifestyle, Electronics, Life Sciences, Military & Institutional and Filtration & Energy.
In consumer sectors, the presence of P2i’s technology is indicated either by Aridion™, its brand for Electronics, or ion-mask™, its brand for Lifestyle (including footwear and accessories). See www.p2i.com for more information.
What is Aridion™?
Aridion™ is P2i’s revolutionary liquid repellent nano-coating for Electronics. Aridion™ is applied using a special pulsed ionized gas (plasma), which is created within a vacuum chamber, to attach a nanoscopic polymer layer – one thousand times thinner than a human hair – to the electronic device. This dramatically lowers the product's surface energy, so that when liquids or moisture come into contact with it they are repelled from the surface instead of wetting.
