Abstract:
Iranian researchers at Bu Ali Sina University in collaboration with their counterparts at Hamedan University of Technology managed to synthesize and assess the performances of three types of silica to propose an appropriate heavy metal ions nano adsorbent (used for aqueous separation purposes).
The removal of heavy metal ions is a crucial issue in the wastewater treatment practices. Many research works have been conducted on the topic and among all of them, adsorption has been of significant attention due to its simplicity and low cost.
The joint research team investigated the adsorptive behavior of three samples - functionalized commercial silica gel (NH2-SG), functionalized hollow nano silica (NH2-SNHS), and non-functionalized hollow nano silica (SNHS)- and concluded that the amine-modified hollow nano silica is an efficient adsorbent for the heavy metals namely nickel, cadmium and lead (Ni2+, Cd2+, Pb2+).
According to the obtained results, NH2-SNHS showed the highest adsorption efficiency for the mentioned ions. Kinetic studies also confirmed that the shortest necessary contact time for the adsorption process belongs to the adsorbent NH2-SNHS which is quite favorable from a practical/industrial point of view.
A detailed report on this research work can be found in Separation and Purification Technology.
