Home > Press > Edmonton Economic Development Corporation: Taking Ideas from Lab to Market - Regional Alliance series features TEC Edmonton
Abstract:
TEC Edmonton partnered with the Northern Alberta Business Incubator and novaNAIT to create the Greater Edmonton Regional Technology Alliance in 2009, formed to address the needs of entrepreneurs in Greater Edmonton through delivering support and resources. TEC also provides services including marketing and business planning, intellectual property protection, finding funding and investors, providing facilities and helping clients hire key staff.
"TEC Edmonton is the exclusive technology transfer agent for the University of Alberta (U of A) and is playing an increasingly important role in the technology transfer activities of Greater Edmonton," said Lorne A. Babiuk, board chair of TEC Edmonton. "It has developed a strong reputation for propelling innovation from the lab to the market."
In 2011, TEC Edmonton created/renewed four U of A commercial spinoffs and helped secure almost $40 million in funding for three U of A initiatives, including the Edmonton Radiopharmaceutical Centre.
"TEC Edmonton uses combinations of high level skill sets in the areas of business, intellectual property and analytics, to best mentor and advise start-up, technology-based companies. Their customer base comes from one of the world's best public universities, as well as draws from the private sector of one of the most visionary cities in Canada," said Candace Brinsmead, vice-president of innovation and technology advancement at EEDC. "Edmonton Research Park works collaboratively with TEC Edmonton and other incubation facilities in the region to ensure that all tech-based start-ups in Edmonton have access to this sorely needed resource."
Other alliance members include Edmonton Economic Development Corporation (EEDC), TEC Edmonton, novaNAIT, Northern Alberta Business Incubator, Business Link and National Institute of Nanotechnology, TR Labs, the National Research Council's Industrial Research and Assistance Program, and Startup Edmonton.
