Family calls off search for New York man who went missing in Detroit

Abstract:
The public search for a missing New Yorker who came to Detroit last week was called off by his family Thursday -- but the mystery of where he is and what he was doing here remains.

Michael Treder, 58, from Brooklyn, NY, told his girlfriend he was flying to Detroit to attend the Science and Engineering Fair of Metro Detroit at Cobo Center March 13-17.

But he never went to the conference and was last heard from March 14. He left all of his possessions in his room at the Fort Shelby Doubletree Hotel in downtown Detroit, except for his cell phone and laptop.

The mystery deepened Thursday with news that Treder had crossed the border into Canada and was never expected at the science fair in the first place.

"Police have confirmation Mike has left Detroit and is in Canada," the family said in a statement. "We believe he went on his own volition and is safe. So there is no longer a need for an investigation into his whereabouts. The family would like to thank everyone for their concern."
