Event: A workshop sponsored by the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI) and local partners to assess the current landscape of regional, state, and local (RSL) nanotechnology initiatives.

Date and Location: The workshop will be held at the Embassy Suites hotel in downtown Portland, Oregon, on May 1-2, 2012, with optional site visits to nanotechnology facilities on April 30th, 2012. See the hotel registration links and phone numbers below.

Themes: Principal themes addressed in the workshop will include: a) the current landscape of U.S. RSL nanotechnology initiatives and their health; b) current Federal resources available for RSLs; c) RSL best practices, business models, and opportunities for partnering; and d) the role of nanotechnology RSLs in future U.S. economic growth and job creation.

Agenda: Confirmed speakers include Dr. Clayton Teague, former NNCO Director; Don Kania, FEI ; Ted Wheeler, Oregon State Treasurer; Tim Harper, Technology Entrepreneur and Owner of Cientifica; Mark Skinner, Vice President of State Science and Technology Institute (SSTI); Vincent Caprio, Executive Director of the NanoBusiness Commercialization Assocation; Travis Earles, Senior Manager of Advanced Materials & Nanotechnology Initiatives at Lockheed Martin; Mary Jo Waits, Director of
Economic, Human Services & Workforce Divisionat the National Governors Association; and Jim Mason, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Nanotechnology Initiative. (Full agenda coming soon.)

Participants: Attendees will include leaders of regional, state, and local organizations and the Federal government; economic development groups; investors and entrepreneurs; technology leaders; and scientists and engineers from industry, business, government, academia, and the general public.

Optional Site Visit on April 30th: Board bus at 9am at Embassy Suites (coffee and donuts from Voodoo Donuts to be provided). Tours of Intel, FEI, and the "Silicon Forest". Lunch at the historic McMenamin's Cornelius Pass Roadhouse. Afternoon tour at Portland State Business Accelerator (nanotech startups) and the Center for Electron Microscopy and Nanofabrication (ONAMI shared user facility), and NWNanoNetTM remote access demo. Limited space available on a first come, first served basis.
