Abstract:
Operations of pulp and paper mills are going to be more and more difficult with time because of increasing efforts in recycling. On the other hand paper mills are slowly being forced by the environmental regulators to reduce water consumption by recycling to the level of zero-discharge. Recycling of fibre; use of recovered paper by paper mills is already in practice around the world. Recycling of chemicals and energy is also being made by mills to reduce cost of production and environmental improvement.
However, these recycling processes increase enormously the harsh environments such as abrasion, corrosion, fouling, scaling, pitch, stickies, DCS (Dissolved and colloidal substances), NPE (Non-process elements), chemicals, thermal treatment etc, which are thoroughly reviewed and discussed in this book including occurrence and control.
New strategies and technologies are available and rapidly evolving for better recycling and solving problems due to harsh environments. This book discusses all the issues; both problems and solutions for harsh environments. The chemical, biochemical, material and mechanical routes, pursued to address these problems have been reviewed.
Control and prevention of harsh environments automatically lead to stable systems with benefits of achieving smooth operations, reduced maintenance cost, environmental protection, enhancing pulp and paper quality as well as mill productivity, efficiency and financial benefits. While the basic objective of this book is to review the sources, causes, problems and solutions for harsh environments in pulp and paper manufacturing, it has been attempted to demonstrate how the micro and nano phenomena and substances have bearing on the formation and solutions of harsh environments.
