U.S. Secretary of Energy Steven Chu Visits RUSNANO

Moscow, Russia | Posted on June 16th, 2011

The June 7th meeting took place on his first day in Moscow. Delegates from the U. S. Department of Energy came to RUSNANO to acquaint themselves with innovative industry in the country and to seek avenues for collaboration on joint projects in energy and energy efficiency improvements.

The delegation included key officials at the U. S. Department of Energy: Thomas P. D'Agostino, under secretary for nuclear security and administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration, Brandon Hurlbut, chief of staff; and Jonathan Elkind, principal deputy assistant secretary, Office of Policy and International Affairs.

Mr. Chu and the other members of the American delegation met with Andrey Malyshev, deputy CEO of RUSNANO, and Alexander Losyukov, deputy CEO of RUSNANO who coordinates the company's international activities.

Mr. Malyshev explained to the guests the company's activities in Russia and abroad, particularly in the United States, where RUSNANO opened an office earlier in the year. He described RUSNANO's projects in energy and energy efficiency.

"We believe that the development of innovative technologies cannot move forward with just a local approach. Therefore, we aim toward broad collaborative efforts," said Andrey Malyshev. "Our task is to provide a sharp increase in the number of promising innovative companies."

"Nanotechnology is an important opportunity for cooperation and collaboration between the United States and Russia," said Secretary Chu. "Working together, we can accelerate the pace of discovery and benefit both countries."

Mr. Malyshev said that RUSNANO will propose a program for cooperation focused on promising technologies in energy and energy efficiency and nanotechnology centers. The projects of the programs are expected to be carried out under DOE auspices with RUSNANO participation. Steven Chu said that the experts of DOE will also prepare proposals for cooperation.

On June 6, 2011, Mr. Chu visited one of the project companies of RUSNANO, St. Petersburg company Optogan. He recounted visiting the plant where LEDs are being produced and the demonstration for the delegates of precision equipment for creating energy efficient lighting technology.
