Forum Focus: Enabling the technologies for the smart super phone 2020

2010 was the year of the massive breakthrough of smart phones with all their innovative features and applications. These indispensable mini PCs help us manage our activities and they give us excitant entertainment and social interaction. This is not the end; it is just a beginning. Ever more users will want to exchange more and richer information. Keeping up with this race demands innovative technologies.

Super-fast, low-power processors will allow phones to run full-blown apps. The dream of ‘anything, anytime, anywhere' will come to fruition. Mobile gaming will go to an extra dimension with high-resolution graphics and seamless movements. And real-time holography will give the ultimate live experience to games and video. A cell phone will also play an increasingly central role in personal health and healthcare cycle (not only in Western but certainly also in remote locations). It will act both as a sentinel and a gateway. It will gradually turn into a really personal device, not just personalized.

All the user's wishes on connected applications will only really come true if these smart super phones come in ‘light' flavor concerning power consumption, form and weight, and cost. A wide range of future technologies can realize these ultimate smart vision and communication systems. Lightweight, compact, high-quality zoom lenses based on micromirrors will allow to integrate in smart phones better zoom lenses than in today's professional digital reflex cameras. NEMS (nano-electromechancial systems) will enable high-definition holographic displays. 3D integration of sensors and actuators will add extra functionality to interact and react with our environment. And ultra-low power ultra-high speed versatile radios will fulfill the ever increasing mobility and connectivity expectations of users.
