Abstract:
RUSNANO, the Russian Corporation of Nanotechnologies, has awarded AECOM a contract to design Chuvashia's energy-efficient house of the future.
AECOM's contractual clients are the Mortgage Corporation of the Chuvash Republic and the TUS building company. Nanotechnology is the study of manipulating matter at an atomic and molecular scale.
RUSNANO is a Russian Federation-chartered agency that invests in nanotechnology projects with business potential and/or social benefit. Its mission is to advance Russia into the pool of the world's leading countries in the field of nanotechnologies. RUSNANO has a fund of 130 billion rubles (approx US$5 billion), provided solely by the Russian government.
Andy Parkman, AECOM's Director of Building Engineering for Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States said, "Nanotechnologies have a particularly important role to play in building design and construction. In the ‘Energy Efficient House of the Future' program for example, composite materials are lighter and stronger that many of their traditional counterparts. Nano additives can make cement stronger and more weather resistant than regular cement and there are nanocoatings that are fireproof. To reduce a building's energy footprint, we could potentially use nano aerogel insulation, the most thermally efficient material known; quantum dot-enabled LED lighting, which is significantly more energy efficient than even fluorescent lighting and nanofiber air filters and nano-enabled thermochromic windows could reduce energy use even more. We could incorporate some of the new types of solar cells that use nano-ink instead of silicon and nano-enabled energy storage devices to make the house at least partially energy self-sustaining."
Bill Looney, who is responsible for leading the nanotechnology initiative for AECOM's environment business said, "This is another example of the importance that nanotechnology and nano-enabled materials are going to play in our lives. The Fredonia Group, a market research firm, has predicted that nano-enabled construction materials will increase from approximately 1% of the total used in 2006 to 7% in 2011 to 19% in 2016 to 54% in 2025. And a recent release by Lux Research indicates that use of nanomaterials offers the potential to reduce total energy consumption for the U.S., Germany, and Japan by as much as 12% in 2020."
"We plan to use our recent collaborative agreement with the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee (UW-Milwaukee) nanomaterials engineering group to develop AECOM-client-UW-Milwaukee partnerships to develop and evaluate nanotechnology-enabled building materials. This project in support of RUSNANO demonstrates that AECOM is really at the forefront of innovative and practical use of nanomaterials."
