Abstract:
The Center of Innovation for Nanobiotechnology (COIN) today announced as it nears the halfway point of its four-year grant from the NC Biotechnology Center that the organization has successfully completed start up activities and is positioning itself for longer term growth.

Accomplishments under the direction of Brooks Adams, President & Executive Director include:

Fully staffed with four full-time employees, three part-time contractors and a host of university interns (19 to date)

NanoBio Executive Roundtable Series launched attracting over 200 attendees from eight states

Showcase events conducted in the Piedmont Triad, Research Triangle Park, and Washington DC

Recruitment of MANCEF COMS 2011 international nanotechnology conference to NC

Organized upcoming nanobio/nanomedicine track and emerging company workshop for the NC Nanotechnology Commercialization Conference in Charlotte on March 29th

NanoBioConnect, a data-rich web portal, launched with profiles of over 60 NC organizations that has attracted visitors from every continent

Grant writing service established with eight proposals submitted and three awarded to date

Relocation to a centrally located headquarters in Durham, NC (Open House March 8th)

Secured the financial support of several high profile sponsors and members toward the goal of sustainability

Positioned COIN as a thought leader and voice of the nanobiotechnology community

Given successful completion of startup milestones, on March 16th, Brooks Adams will step down to pursue other opportunities but will remain available to advise COIN during the transition to new leadership. COIN will now initiate a search for a new executive director to further develop and implement its longer-term growth strategy.

Brooks Adams commented: "As a seventh generation North Carolinian and from a family of doctors, establishing COIN with the early support of the N.C. Biotechnology Center, Wake Forest University, NC A&T State University, UNC Greensboro, and the Piedmont Triad Partnership has been a wonderful personal opportunity for me to give something back to North Carolina and to contribute to the advancement of medicine for the betterment of the human condition. As I reflect on COIN's accomplishments, I would like to express appreciation to COIN's staff and to numerous collaborators including the Scientific Advisory Board and Board of Directors; university, industry, and service provider partners; the NC Biotechnology Center; NC BIO; and Southeast TechInventures for all the hard work to get us launched."

Michael Batalia: "Under Mr. Adams' leadership, COIN has established basic resources to support the nanobiotechnology community in North Carolina and beyond. With this first phase complete, COIN is ready to expand its offerings and programs to continue to be the premier organization promoting nanobiotechnology commercialization."

Mary Beth Thomas: "As with any start-up organization, establishing a solid foundation during its earliest stage of development is a critical element that will allow future growth to occur. The NC Biotechnology Center appreciates all of the efforts that Brooks Adams has put forward to put COIN on solid footing that will allow for continued and accelerated growth of this nascent organization.
