Abstract:
Experts with Iran Polymer and Petrochemical Institute developed a new method to produce PC/ABS alloy of low flammability out of phosphate compounds and nanoclay on a semi-industrial scale with a plan to commercialize the product.
In this research, simultaneous addition of phosphate compounds and nanoclay to PC/ABS alloys was shown to improve the alloy strength against heat and flame considerably.
"Although nanoclay compounds decrease peak heat release rate, they are not effective fire-extinguishing agents and cannot hinder ignition or flame spread," Yousef Jahani, member of scientific board of Iran Polymer and Petrochemical Institute, told Iran Nanotechnology Initiative Council.
"Through this research work, we studied the feasibility of a nanotech-based industrial product with low flammability and therefore, we established a flexible pilot plant for production of compatibilizer-free PC/ABS alloy with characteristics similar to those by Bayer Co."
"In a following step, by applying hybrid compounds of nanoclay and phosphates, we managed to obtain higher resistance of the alloy against flame without sacrificing much of desired mechanical properties," he added.
Jahani pointed out that Iran's National Petrochemical Company seeks large-scale implementation of the idea in several units of Khuzestan Petrochemical Complex according to a signed contract. "Regarding the large consumption by electronics and auto industries, a good demand from the mentioned industrial sections is predicted," he said.
