Nanotechnology group to hold national conference in Greensboro

Greensboro, NC | Posted on January 10th, 2011

The Micro and Nanotechnology Commercialization Education Foundation plans to hold its Commercialization of Micro-Nano Systems Conference Aug. 28-31 in Greensboro.

The group said that North Carolina is "a hotbed of small technology activity; with 35 nanotech university research centers, over 80 nanobiotech and nanotechnology companies."

Economic and education experts in the state say this type of technology is a key way for the state to attract high-paying jobs and keep its colleges and universities competitive with others around the world.

The Piedmont Triad is one of those centers of development.

In a news release, the foundation says that Greensboro's Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering and RF Micro Devices are among the organizations that make this state a significant player along with UNC-Chapel Hill and Duke University.

"No other region in the world is such a highly concentrated hub of MNT action," the news release said.

Nanotechnology is used in advanced manufacturing, aerospace and aviation, automotive, biopharmaceuticals, defense, energy, financial services, software and information technology as well as textiles, the foundation said.

Researchers at Greensboro's joint school, in alliance with the Gateway University Research Park, are already working on such advanced composite materials that combine the strength of steel with the flexibility of fabric materials to lighten and strengthen car and aircraft parts.

The foundation said more information will be coming soon about the conference, but did not release location or registration information Thursday.
