Abstract:
October 13 Ceremony to Highlight Progress on New Light Source and Interdisciplinary Science Building
EVENT: Construction workers - along with Brookhaven Lab, Department of Energy, and elected officials - will sign an I-beam at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II), marking the completion of the structural steel framework - more than a half-mile in circumference - for this next-generation facility. In addition, officials and guests will lay a cornerstone at the Interdisciplinary Science Building (ISB) site to mark the start of construction. Together, these two projects at Brookhaven Lab are creating 2,000 jobs, benefitting the local economy.
WHEN: Wednesday, October 13, 2010, 2-3:30 p.m. Note: Media are invited to tour the NSLS-II construction site at 2 p.m. The ISB ceremony will take place at 2:30 p.m., with the NSLS-II ceremony to follow at 3 p.m.
WHERE: The U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory. The Lab is located on William Floyd Parkway (County Road 46), one-and-a-half miles north of Exit 68 of the Long Island Expressway.
DETAILS: In 2009, Brookhaven Lab started construction of the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II), a $912-million facility. When completed, NSLS-II will be the world's most advanced synchrotron light source, providing unique capabilities will pave the way to discoveries in physics, chemistry, and biology - advances that will enhance national and energy security and help drive abundant, safe, and clean energy technologies. During its construction, the project is expected to create more than 1,250 labor union construction jobs and 450 scientific, engineering, and support jobs, plus additional jobs at U.S. material suppliers and service providers.
By the time conventional construction is complete, Brookhaven Lab will have purchased $120 million in labor, most of it supplied by Long Island labor unions, and $115 million in materials, much from Long Island vendors. Thanks in part to $150 million in Recovery Act funding, the project is on track to be completed ahead of schedule.
Brookhaven is also beginning construction of its new Interdisciplinary Science Building. The $66.8-million facility will group Brookhaven's energy researchers into one location to realize the benefits of multidisciplinary collaboration. Research in the building will focus on energy-related R&D, enabling breakthroughs in the effective uses of renewable energy through improved conversion, transmission and storage. With $18.6 million in Recovery Act funding accelerating the construction phase of the project, site preparation is substantially complete. About 300 jobs will be created during construction.
Media interested in attending should RSVP to Kendra Snyder at (631)344-8191, or to Peter Genzer, (631) 344-3174.

About Brookhaven National Laboratory
One of ten national laboratories overseen and primarily funded by the Office of Science of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Brookhaven National Laboratory conducts research in the physical, biomedical, and environmental sciences, as well as in energy technologies and national security. Brookhaven Lab also builds and operates major scientific facilities available to university, industry, and government researchers. Brookhaven is operated and managed for DOE's Office of Science by Brookhaven Science Associates, a limited-liability company founded by the Research Foundation of the State University of New York, for and on behalf of Stony Brook University, the largest academic user of Laboratory facilities; and Battelle Memorial Institute, a nonprofit, applied science and technology organization.
