Our view: Keep focus on SUNYIT nanotech
Abstract:
Some 175 high-tech jobs are coming to the Mohawk Valley.
That bears repeating: Some 175 jobs are coming to the Mohawk Valley, the first fruits of the nanotechnology project at SUNYIT in Marcy that was announced just over a year ago.
This initial success makes it all the more incumbent upon the governor, our region's state legislators, county leaders and state-level education officials to ensure the nanotech initiative stays on course in coming months and years. The costs will be in the tens of millions, but the benefit will be nothing less than the long-overdue modernization of our region's economy.
Mohawk Valley residents are rightly impatient with the pace of economic growth in the region. Booms seen elsewhere in recent decades did not occur here. Nonetheless, nanotechnology at SUNYIT is a clear path forward for the Utica-Rome-Herkimer area.
