Manufacturing Digital Focuses on the Nanoscale

Norwich, UK | Posted on July 5th, 2010

Russell Cowburn, Professor of nanotechnology at Imperial College London likened nanotechnology to Henry Ford's production line. "In the early days, people would look at Ford's line and say, ‘that's not for my sector of manufacturing; it's only the people who make cars'. In the first instance that was true. But look how it's revolutionized every area of manufacturing. I think the same will be true of nanotechnology. I see it in the medium term as an enabling platform within manufacturing, which will eventually become a day-to-day means to an end."

Simply speaking, nanotechnology is the science of manipulating materials at the scale of 100 nanometers or smaller. The purpose is to engineer materials with new properties that have no counterpart in bulk material, properties that can be harnessed to create new devices, new manufacturing techniques and new products.

Over the last few years a new breed of coatings have emerged from the nanotech labs, including stain resistant and bacteria resistant coatings, machine tool coatings that provide extra durability and specialist coatings for surgical instruments and implants.

Manufacturing Digital discovers the real power of nanotechnology; it will be a medium-term enabling platform for the industry.
